Dr Mitchell is Professor of General Practice and Palliative Care at the University of Queensland, and Head of the MBBS program at Ipswich. His main research interest is in the role of General Practitioners in palliative care and cancer in general, and the care of complex conditions in general practice. He has published extensively in these areas. He has been a chief investigator on grants worth $13.5m. Current research includes interventions to improve outcomes for caregivers with advanced cancer, health services research in palliative care and primary care, and single patient trials. He has research in other area including chronic wound care. He has published 111 papers in peer reviewed journals, and 27 book chapters. Book Publications include contributions to Therapeutic Guidelines Palliative Care and he has edited a book entitled Palliative care: a patient centered-approach. He is a grant reviewer for he NHMRC and numerous other funding agencies. He is an associate editor of BMJ Supportive Palliative care and BMC Family Practice.
Prof Mitchell maintains a clinical general practice in Ipswich, Queensland.
